ABOUT

Our story.

GSF began in a small rural Ontario town, providing fixtures to local retail stores who wanted something built to last.

What has carried us from there to here was never the size of the work. It has always been how we did it.

A small town. No simple trade.

GSF was founded in 1968 by two partners who emigrated from Germany and the Netherlands. They settled in Georgetown, a small village outside Toronto. The work, in those early years, was built for the jewelry stores and shop owners nearby who wanted display cases and cabinetry that looked as considered as what they sold.

It was the kind of work that either holds up under close inspection or it doesn't. That standard is the part of GSF that has never changed.

Decades of change,
without losing the standard.

Over the following decades, the business grew one relationship at a time. Local jewelry and retail stores led to department stores, then to larger retailers in Toronto.

The first generation of owners slowly gave way to the second, who pushed further still — into high-end department stores across the United States, and eventually into a national jewelry chain that gave GSF its international reach.
The early 2000s forced real change.

Client bankruptcies and company restructuring left us needing a new direction — and the range of materials and technical skills we had built up over those years was about to matter more than we knew.

Small institutional projects brought us to New York, where there was more room to grow — and where the next chapter for GSF began.

The work that changed us — before anyone knew our name.

For years, the most demanding work we did carried someone else’s name. We became the shop that other millwork companies called when a project was beyond what they could take on themselves. It taught us an enormous amount, even if almost no one outside that circle knew the work was ours.

Around 2010 is when the overlap started taking place for the third generation of owners. That time also brought us our biggest challenge. We took on a project that pushed everything we knew to its edge: a flagship store for one of the world’s most recognized luxury brands, with a level of material complexity and precision that left no room for a wrong move. We rebuilt our approach to engineering that year — new software, new equipment, new ways of thinking through a problem — and came out the other side genuinely different from every other shop in our category.

It took years more before we put our own name on our own work. In 2018, we made that decision for good. Everything since has carried the GSF name — and, for the first time, so has the recognition.

What has never changed.

If you ask us what GSF is actually good at, the honest answer is engineering. It is the thing that has let us take on work that looks impossible on paper and find a way to make it real — and to do it at a price that makes sense, because a one-of-a-kind piece does not have to be built like one.

We run a flat shop. The people building a piece are often the ones who spot a better way to engineer it — and the engineers, in turn, push the builders to try things they hadn’t before. Each side makes the other better. It is a small detail that changes almost everything about how a project comes together.

Most of the people who work here have been with us for a decade or more. Many came to Canada from somewhere else entirely, and have built careers here doing work they are genuinely proud of. That kind of continuity means every new project carries the lessons of the last one — refined, not repeated.

Owner-operated. By design.

GSF is owned and run by two people: myself and Sukarnan. We both studied architecture before this, which shapes how we work more than people might expect — it gives us a design sensibility that lets us speak the same language as the architects and designers we work alongside, and a respect for the fact that the smallest details are usually the ones that matter most.

I joined the company in 2009 and became a partner in 2015. Between us, we have spent most of our careers inside this firm, which is probably why we still treat every project as if our name is the only one that matters.
Now, it is.
